Player questions

Getting into your club, saying you're playing, and your scorecard on the day. Anything not here is a question for your admin.

Getting in

Your account, the club, and your name on its list.

  • P1How do I get into my club?

Open the link your admin sent you and press New here? Create an account. Give your first and last name as the club knows you, your birthday, ZIP code and a secret word, then an email and a password. The link carries the club's code, so you are in the club the moment the account is made.

Given a code instead? Sign in and type the six characters where the app asks. The QR code on your admin's phone does the same without typing — point your camera at it.

Sent a link to a tournament? Open it and press I'd like to play in the next tournament, and your admin adds you.

Your record says That's you, with your name on it, once you are matched to your name on the club's list.

  • P2My record says my admin is matching me to my record.

Nothing is wrong, and there is nothing for you to do. The app matches you to your name on the club's list as you come in, but it waits for your admin in two cases: your name already has tournaments behind it, or the list has two people with your name. Handing somebody's history to the wrong person is the one mistake it will not risk.

Your admin sees your birthday and ZIP code beside the record and says whether it is you. Press Check for updates on Your record to see when that has happened.

  • P3Why does it ask for my birthday, ZIP code and a secret word?

To tell you apart from somebody else with your name. A club can have two John Smiths. Month and day of birth, ZIP code and a secret word are three things a namesake almost never shares, so when a second John Smith signs up the app knows he is a different person — and when the same John Smith signs up twice, it knows that too and stops him making a duplicate.

The secret word is not a password. You are never asked for it to sign in. The app keeps it scrambled and cannot show it to anybody — not you, and not your admin.

Your birthday and ZIP code are shown to you on Your record, and to your admin only when two records share your name and they have to say which one is yours. The year you were born is never asked.

Made your account before these were asked? On Your record, press the pencil on Add your birthday, ZIP code and secret word.

  • P4I've forgotten my secret word.

Nothing is locked. You never need it to sign in or to play.

Choose a new one on Your record: press the pencil on What tells you apart from a namesake, type a new word, and press Save. Your birthday and ZIP code are already filled in; the word box is empty because the app cannot show the old one back.

It only matters if you ever make a second account — for a new email address, say. The same three again is how the app knows it is you and not a namesake, so keep the new word somewhere you will find it.

  • P5I forgot my password.

On the sign-in screen, press Forgot your password? and a link comes to your email.

Nothing arrived, or it expired? Press Send it again on the same panel — no retyping, and the newest link is always the one that works. If you mistyped the address, Use a different email takes you back to the box.

Or skip the password: Email me a sign-in link instead sends a link that signs you straight in. It expires after a few minutes, so open it when it arrives.

  • P6I need to use a different email address.

The app can't change the email on an account, so a new address means a new account, and your admin moves your record onto it. Every result belongs to your name, not your login, so nothing is lost.

Ask first. On Your record, press the pencil beside your email, then Need a different email?, type the new address and press Send to my admin.

Then sign out and make a new account with the new address, under the same name. You don't need the link or the club code — the new account comes straight into the club, and your admin moves your name onto it with one press.

Playing in a tournament

Saying you're coming, your scorecard, and your scores.

  • P7How do I say I'm playing?

The Club is your home page, and the next tournament is at the top. What its card offers depends on how your admin is running it.

If your admin has put you in, it says You're playing., with Maybe and Can't make it beside it. There is nothing to press unless that changes.

If the tournament is taking sign-ups, press I'd like to play. Depending on how your club runs it you are in straight away, or the card says You've asked until your admin says yes. A full tournament offers Join the waiting list instead, and past the sign-up deadline the button reads Ask the admin for a place.

Maybe does not hold you a place. It takes you out of the draw the same as Can't make it does — say you're playing once you know.

  • P8I can't make it after all.

Press Can't make it on the tournament's card on The Club. You can do it right up until your admin starts the tournament, and your admin's phone is told — nobody has to ring round.

Once it has started, tell your admin. A phone can't take a player out of rounds that are already being dealt; your admin can.

  • P9Where do I find my table and partner?

Your scorecard, from The Club or the nine-dot menu. It fills in the moment your admin presses Start: your table, your partner, and who you are against in round one. Before that it says you will see your card once the tournament has begun, because the seating can change every time somebody joins or drops out.

Across the top is a pill for every round, and the one you are on is green. Under the card, Your rounds lists your table, partner and opponents for every round, and Who's playing who shows the whole room, with Find a player for seeing where somebody is sitting.

Your phone can tell you instead. Switch on Tell me on this device and it is told your table and partner the moment the tournament starts — see *Can the app tell me when results are up?* below.

  • P10How do I put my score in?

As the hand happens, tap We got euchred each time the other pair euchres you, and I won a loner when you go alone and take all five tricks. When the round ends, put in Your team's score, check the euchre and loner boxes the taps filled in, and press Save round 1 — or whichever round it is.

You and your partner put in the same number. That is how the app catches a slip. If your club pays a loner to the player who called it, the box reads Your score instead, and the two of you can differ by exactly those loners.

Rounds go in in order. The app won't take round 3 until every table has put round 2 in, because a score nobody wrote down at the time can't be worked out later. If the room is waiting on one table, your admin can move everybody on.

  • P11My partner and I put in different scores.

Both cards say so in amber, and neither number counts until one of you changes theirs. Read the round back together, fix the wrong one and save it again.

If your club has turned on The whole table has to agree, the card also shows what the pair opposite put in once you have saved, and a table that doesn't add up says so on all four cards until somebody corrects it.

  • P12There's no signal in the hall.

Keep scoring and press Save as normal. A round saved with no signal stays on your phone, with an amber note saying so, and goes up to the club on its own the moment there is signal again — in the car park, at home — even if you close the app.

Don't type it in again. Once you have pressed Save, it is safe.

The one thing that is lost is a card you were half-way through and never saved.

  • P13My phone's scorecard isn't showing what was just synced.

A copy of the app opened from the home screen has no swipe-to-reload, so a scorecard that was already open when the admin pressed Sync kept showing the old seating and rounds. Press Refresh, beside the speaker button at the top of the scorecard, and it asks the club for the latest.

It also asks on its own: every fifteen seconds while a tournament is being played, and every time the phone comes back to the app. So a card left open on the table keeps up with the club's admin without anybody pressing anything — Refresh is for the moment you cannot wait fifteen seconds.

A newer version of the app is different from newer data. When one has shipped, a bar appears at the foot of the screen saying so, with a Reload button. Nothing you have entered is lost by pressing it.

  • P14My scorecard says a round couldn't be filed.

Rare, and nothing you did. Your phone held that round while there was no signal, and by the time it got through the club couldn't take it — usually because the tournament had been finished, or the seating changed and you were no longer in that round.

Your numbers are printed on the card, under What you put in. Read them to your admin; they can still put them in from their end.

Then press I've told them and the notice goes.

  • P15I'm in two tournaments at once. Which scorecard is mine?

Both are. A big event can run a singles and a doubles side by side, and you can be in each. The Club still shows one scorecard card, with a line under it: You're playing in 2 tournaments at once. Show the card for: and a button for each. Press the other one and the card switches.

On the scorecard itself, a line at the top says You're also playing the other tournament, with a link that opens its card. Press Save before you switch: a round typed and not saved is not kept.

The scoreboard works the same way. Also on: at the top names the other tournament; press it to see that board.

Your phone and your record

Notifications, your calendar, and what your record shows.

  • P16Can the app tell me when results are up?

Yes, on a phone you switch it on for. Open Your record or your scorecard and turn on Tell me on this device. From then on that device hears four things: you're playing, when you are seated for a tournament; it has started, with your table and partner for round one; round N is in, with who is leading, the moment the last table of a round is scored; and results are up, the moment your admin finishes it. Nothing else is sent — no reminders, no marketing, and nothing to anybody who has not pressed the switch.

It is per device, not per person. A laptop you never pressed it on stays quiet. Switch it off the same way, or in your phone's settings.

On an iPhone, put the app on your home screen first. In Safari tap the three dots at the bottom, then Share, then Add to Home Screen, then open it from that icon — Show me how on the switch has pictures of each tap. Apple only delivers notifications to a site installed that way; the switch tells you if you are not there yet. On Android and on a computer it works straight from the site — Chrome asks once whether to allow it.

Said no by mistake? The site can't ask again. In Chrome, tap the lock in the address bar and turn Notifications on. On an iPhone it is in Settings, under Notifications, next to the app's name.

Your admin never sees a phone number for this. The phone hands the club a one-off address only this site can use, and deleting your account deletes it.

  • P17Can I put the tournaments on my phone's calendar?

Yes — subscribe once and they keep themselves up to date. On Your record, under your name, the card Subscribe to tournaments on your calendar gives you a link. Every tournament of every club you are in appears on your calendar with its address and start time, moves when your admin moves it, and stays on the calendar marked cancelled if it is called off.

iPhone or Mac: press Add to iPhone or Mac calendar and confirm the Subscribe sheet. Google Calendar: press Copy link, then on a computer open calendar.google.com, find Other calendars, press +, choose From URL and paste. Outlook: Add calendar, Subscribe from web, paste.

It is a subscription, not a one-off. Your calendar app checks the link on its own, usually every hour or so, so a change your admin makes shows up without you doing anything. A tournament with no start time shows as an all-day event.

Don't forward the link. It opens your clubs' tournaments, addresses included, without signing in. Anybody who wants their own can get one from their own record.

  • P18What is Your company on my record?

Who you play with, and who you play against. Every other board ranks you alone; this reads the seating. For each partner: how many rounds you have sat together and how many of them your pair won. For each opponent: how many rounds they have sat across from you and how many they took. Above the lists, the two things a card table would say — who you win most with, and who has your number — once there are three rounds behind them.

A round is won by the pair with more points at the table, which under the standard game is the pair that reached ten. Only settled tables count: both cards in and agreeing.

Singles only. Doubles never share statistics with singles, and a doubles partner is a team rather than company — the pairs boards on the club's statistics page cover that.

It starts empty, and that is expected. Imported tournaments say who finished where, not who sat where, so nothing before the app has any seating to read. The card fills in from the first tournament played in the app, and admins see the same thing on Player Admin under Their company.

  • P19The app keeps switching between light and dark on its own.

Nothing in the app is doing that. Press Account at the foot of any screen, and under Appearance there are three settings, and the third one — Auto — follows your phone. Phones set to change appearance at sunset take the app with them, which is what you are seeing.

Pick Light or Dark to hold it. That choice is remembered on that phone and stops following anything.

It is per device and per browser, so a phone and a laptop can disagree, and so can two browsers on one machine. Nobody else in the club is affected by what you pick.

Your membership

Your $5 for the year, and playing at a big tournament.

  • P20How do I pay my $5?

On The Club, on the membership card above your scorecard. Your first 30 days are free, counted from your first tournament; the card tells you the day they end. After that it asks for $5.00 for the year, or $14.00 for 3 years.

Pick how long, then press Pay. You pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, on Stripe's secure page.

It shows within seconds. The card then says you're covered for the year, or for the next 3 years.

Your card is kept for next year. When your year is up, it's charged only after you play your next tournament, so if you stop coming you're never charged again. Remove saved card on the membership card takes it away.

Paying at the door? Pay on your phone and it clears at once.

  • P21What is the pass at a big tournament?

At a tournament of 60 players or more, the club pays $2 for every player, so nobody needs to have paid their $5 to play in it. You still sign up with your account as usual, and the tournament doesn't count toward your membership year.

If you owe your $5 when one of those comes round, your membership card says You are cleared to play in the next tournament. You'll be reminded about your membership before the tournament after it.
